< x : X : x : X : x : X : x > Hullo! This is Necessary Death, a (tiny) shrine to Eduard Heiderich of the hit anime series Hagane no Renkinjutsushi. <3 The Basics For everyone in the Hagaren World is a person "physically identical" to them on the other side of The Gate in Our World. Alter!Ed only appears in two episodes of the fifty-one episode series, and hardly plays a part at all in the story. At the end of episode forty-nine, "The Other Side of The Gate," Edward Elric is forced to The Gate's other side, where his soul is magnatively sucked into Eduard's body living in World War I-era London. Then it continues in episode fifty, "Death." At the time, Ed is in control of Edu's body, but he can hear his alter's thoughts. Eduard only ever says one thing to him: "Who are you?" After Ed's confrontation with his father Hohenhiem about Equivalent Exchange and Dante, he walks away. While Hohenhiem is in a car (to a meeting with Winston Churchhill) driving away from the Edwards, he sees a zeppelin falling towards the ground. It strikes the building Ed was in. In Alter!Ed's body he attempts to transmute the burning wood on top of him by clapping his hands, but nothing happens. A large block of wood collapes and kills Alter Edward. With him dead, Ed's soul was able to go back into his body at The Gate. Because of this Ed was able to escape from Our World to defeat the Homunculi. Ironicly, Ed also dies in this episode. Why was it "necessary"? It was necessary for Eduard to die so Ed could return home. If he had not died, many others would have. Alters All of the alternates resemble the person they are connected with, though they don't always look exactly the same. Such as Heiderich having different eye and hair colors than Al. Alter!Ed has bangs like Ed's, but his are shorter and at an angle, and his hair is not long. This is what Ed would look like if his hair was trimmed often. Going In-Depth Nothing is known of Alter!Ed except for: he knew Hohenhiem and he lived in London. We have no idea what his occupation was, how he was connected to Hohenhiem, who his parents were, if he had siblings, or anything of the sort. That's just one the reasons I'm a fan of the "character." He can hardly even be called a character, because we don't even know about his personality or traits. But it's fun to imagine what they were like, and it gives you interesting thoughts. A high popular fan-speculation is that Alter!Ed is the brother of Alfons Heiderich (Ed's brother's alter) and that his full name is Eduard Heiderich, and is shortened to Edu. Eduard is often sported in fanfiction in which he is Heiderich's brother and is also a subject of fanart. <3 Sixteen demons clouded the skies over London.... The episode when Alter!Ed dies in set on September 2nd, 1916 AD. During World War I zepplins were used as boming crafts. In the episode sixteen of the airships are raining bombs down on London. This is an actual historical event. On that night the German zepplin SL11--the one that crashed into Edu--was shot down by the British pilot William Leefe-Robinson.
